The Island of Madeira is in the Atlantic Ocean, over 500 miles south-west of mainland Portugal. Madeira's nearest neighbours are the Canary Islands to the South and Morocco to the East. The extended airport means much increased safety and more tourists  Madeira is the tip of a mountain range rising from the seabed to over 4 miles high. Created by a volcanic eruption, the island is covered in lush green vegetation often all the way up to the top of steep mountain peaks. Funchal on the south coast is the capital. The north coast is very tranquil and picturesque.
