This large island is close to the Arctic Circle.
Wild landscape, rugged and colourful, with black lava, red sulfur, hot blue geysers, grey and white rivers with waterfalls and green valleys, its coastline is richly indented with bays and fjords..more than half the population live in and around the capital Reykjavik.
At least 30 volcanic systems have been active in the 1100 years. There are special trips to view the eruptions. From May to July it is light all night, the best months for wild flowers and birds. Cultural visits include many museums, churches and restored turf farmhouses. Festivals take place in summer around the capital.
Iceland is a paradise for hikers, riders and outdoor enthusiasts, bird-watchers and city breaks.
